Levelling is no longer specialist work.
By Staenis | 05/05/2023

Zulte, May 4, 2023 - With the new leveling grid from Staenis, DIY enthusiasts and small independent builders can lay 'self-leveling compound' even more easily and much more cheaply. The innovative self-build system developed by the start-up enables a guaranteed smooth leveling layer and significantly reduces stress during installation. After targeting the largest European countries, Staenis now also wants to democratize the American construction market.
Laying a subfloor or screed – commonly known as ‘chapen’ – is something most DIYers do not dare to attempt. Staenis has been changing that for several years now. The East Flemish start-up developed a system to quickly and easily install a floor structure yourself. You place the grid, fill it with the right material, and level it out. Because the grid remains in place, the risk of cracks and fractures is also significantly reduced. Moreover, the different compartments of the grid allow you to spread the floor installation over several days, which is not an option with the traditional method.
The new equalization grid

Due to the simplicity and flexibility of the self-build grid, not only do-it-yourselfers and handymen use the system, but professional construction companies have also found their way to Staenis floors.

Tom Verstaen, co-founder Staenis
“The big difference is that you can now also level the screed between 1 and 5 centimeters,” explains Tom Verstaen, co-founder of Staenis and former Belgian champion in tiling. “Such thin leveling layers used to be real specialist work. With our new leveling grid, we make them accessible to people without experience in the construction sector. A second important advantage is that our system makes it possible to use regular screed instead of the much more expensive self-leveling compound. This makes the screed up to six times cheaper than traditional systems.”
80,000 square meters of Staenis floors
Around 3,000 private individuals and professionals have already installed more than 80,000 square meters (about twenty football fields) of Staenis floors. The customers are located in Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and now also Germany and the United Kingdom.
In 2023, Staenis wants to further accelerate that international expansion, explains co-founder Daisy Bohyn.
We want to double our growth this year to 1 million euros. We are currently in talks to become active in the American market as well. In addition, we are strongly committed to sustainability and want to launch a new circular product.

Simpler and more efficient installation
Staenis introduces a new grid system called 'Staenis Leveling Grid' that significantly facilitates the installation of self-leveling compound and bonded screed. With the ability to precisely adjust the height between 10 mm and 50 mm, this system makes it easier than ever to create a flat and stable substrate for floor finishes.
The introduction of our grid system is a game changer for both professionals and DIY enthusiasts, says Tom Verstaen, Co-founder of Staenis. Not only does it ensure a much simpler and more efficient installation, but it also provides extra protection against cracks and splits in the floor finish.
Applications of leveling compound and bonded screed
A self-leveling mortar is often used to correct irregularities in the floor and can be applied in thicknesses from 3 mm to 50 mm. Bonded screed is an alternative to leveling compound and is used to bond screeds to concrete substrates, with a minimum thickness of 10 mm to 50 mm. Both materials are crucial for creating a solid and durable base for various types of floor finishes.
Innovative height adjustment system
The StaenisGrid system is designed to be easily adjusted in height, allowing installers to quickly and accurately achieve the desired thickness. In addition, the grid reinforces the substrate, which helps to better protect the floor finish against cracks and fractures.

Material selection and cost savings
Although self-leveling compound is generally many times more expensive than bonded screed, the StaenisGrid system offers the possibility to use both materials, depending on the specific needs of the project. This allows installers to choose a bonded screed to save costs, while still benefiting from the advantages of the grid system.
Detailed instructions and tips
To make the installation of self-leveling compound and bonded screed even easier, Staenis offers detailed instructions and tips for the preparation and installation of both materials. This includes the use of the correct primers and the application of a bonding slurry for bonded screed to ensure a strong adhesion to the concrete substrate.

Benefits for professionals and DIYers
The StaenisGrid system is a valuable addition to the toolbox of every floor installer, both for professionals and DIY enthusiasts. Thanks to the easy installation, time savings, and improved durability of the floor finish, this system ensures satisfied customers and a higher quality of the end result.
