Why insulate your floor?
As a builder/renovator you have to comply with increasingly strict insulation standards. Insulating your home is therefore a must. Fortunately, you will be rewarded with the insulation benefits: lower energy bills, more living comfort and a more favourable E-level. Roof insulation already makes a big difference, but for the optimum effect, it is best to also insulate your floors. Here insulation screed can be of service to you. That is screed and floor insulation in one. With an insulating screed, your floor will feel warmer than when you use regular screed. As a result, you need to heat less. That's good for the environment and your budget. An insulated floor also dampens the sound better, making it easier to relax at home. Insulation screed helps save space
There are several ways to insulate a floor. As indicated above, you can opt for floor insulation in which the insulation material is incorporated in the filling layer (insulating screed). An alternative is to place separate insulation boards on the filling layer, or to use polyurethane foam. Why should you choose insulation screed? With insulating screed, insulating material has already been added to the screed. You save space because you don't have to install separate floor insulation. Insulating screed is therefore very interesting when you have little space available to place your floor. After all, no extra filling layer of floor insulation boards is required, so that you gain construction height. Insulation screed can also serve as an additional form of insulation. How well does insulating screed insulate?
A screed without insulating filler has a very limited insulation value: between 1 and 1.3 W/mK. Screed will therefore transmit the cold or heat more quickly, instead of insulating. The average insulation values of insulating screed are a lot more favourable. They are between 0.045 and 0.087 W/mK. Lay your insulating screed yourself and save
You can of course have insulation screed laid by a professional screeder. But in many situations it can be a lot cheaper by doing it yourself. With the screed grid from Staenis you can easily lay your insulating screed yourself as a DIY-er. If that suits you better, you can spread the screed work over several days. How does it work? The plastic Staenis grid consists of battens and legs, which you can easily click together and adjust in height with a screwdriver. Pour the insulation screed into the compartments of the Staenis grid. In this way you can fill your floor in a light and insulating way and then clad it with OSB or Durelis wooden panels. You don't need any experience for that, just a little bit of handiness is enough. The result: an even insulating screed floor structure that will remain beautiful for years. Shaping your bathroom with tileable insulation screed
Planning to screed your bathroom? If you fill the Staenis grid with tileable insulation screed, you get a light, insulating floor structure that you can tile directly. Tileable insulation screed dries quickly, so you can screed, tile and completely finish the floor in just a few days. Tiling is possible after 3 to 4 days of drying time, provided you apply primer and a thin layer of levelling compound at the same height as the top of the Staenis grid. As a result, all irregularities of the insulation screed and installation are eliminated. Good to know: with 1 bag that weighs between 9 and 13 kg, you can install 1 m² of insulating screed floor of 7 cm thick. Watch the installation video here.
Do I have to place a membrane under the insulation screed?
If you use standard insulation screed as a filler for the Staenis grid, you may use a membrane. You can clad it afterwards with OSB plates or Durelis tongue-and-groove plates. Standard insulation screed as a filling layer (without Staenis grid), on the other hand, is always installed without a membrane. Also tileable insulation screed is best placed without membrane, so that it will adhere better to the substrate. Unless there is a risk of rising damp, because then a membrane is needed. If necessary, you can place a screed reinforcement net (in combination with the Staenis grid) on the foil to avoid curving of the insulating screed. Tip: moisten the concrete surface the evening before the work, so that your standard or tileable insulation screed will adhere even better.
What is the price of insulating screed?
The price of insulating screed is on average 150 to 180 euros per m3. The final price of this screed per m3 depends on the type of insulation material, the number of square metres and the thickness of the floor. Are you going to lay your insulation screed yourself?
